Fundraiser Spotlight

How are you feeling about your race, the Berlin Marathon?
In writing this after the fact, I can probably be more honest. I felt OK going in – I had a rocky build, with five weeks off due to a hip stress reaction and one week off due to trying new shoes too late in the game. Despite that, I didn’t change my goal (insane), however, I was able to meet my second goal of under 3:55 by one second.

What does your preparation for such a big race entail?
Discipline with a bit of grace. You don’t hit every workout – whether work, travel, mood – and that’s ok. It’s something I’m trying to balance out more!

How does running help your mental health?
Running gives me an outlet of clarity and freedom. Whether clarity on something that I hadn’t racked my brain around or a total freedom from getting lost in the rhythm and my mind is at ease, that’s what I’m chasing.

Why did you choose Open Door to fundraise for?
I prefer choosing smaller organisations for marathon fundraising efforts, and I loved Open Door’s approach to mental health.

What is your advice for runners who might be anxious about committing to a challenge?
Just sign up for it. You’ll go all in and won’t regret it.

What are your tips for fundraising?
Have fun with it. During this fundraising effort, there was a massive storm in NYC (~20in of snow), and I posted on IG Stories for every dollar donated, I’ll make a snow angel. Ended the day making 360 snow angels.

What is your favourite song to run to?
Porcelain by Moby

We want to say a huge thank you to James and congratulations on reaching the fundraising target of $2725.00. This support is vital during our time of growth. We love the tenacity that comes with taking on these challenges with the same energy that comes with fundraising.

Open Door’s programmes would not be possible without fundraising through individuals, groups, and community effort- if you would like to support Open Door, head to our fundraising page today!
