If you're thinking about applying for a spot in the Liverpool Half Marathon next year, you're in the right place. Learn more about Hannah and Katriona, who ran for Open Door in the 2026 Liverpool Half Marathon, and why it was so important for them to take on the challenge for us.
Running is a personal journey for all, exercise can reflect someone choosing themselves, to look after their mind and body with every run they do. Whether that be a short jog round the block, the couch to 5K that had us in a chokehold during Covid or a multiple marathon challenge- it all counts towards looking after yourself physically and mentally. The relationship between mental health and exercise ebbs and flows with regular exercise increasing endorphins and dopamine while poor mental health can obstruct individuals from exercise. Taking on a challenge such as a weekend Park Run or a local race can create and solidify a running practice and reignite self-worth, choosing mood-boosting energy over doomscrolling.
At Open Door we want to encourage everyone able to take the leap and sign up to a challenge or simply choose yourself in a new way to shift your mindset and focus on you. We want to showcase our amazing runners Hannah Scott and Katriona Grimes who have supported Open Door this year at the Liverpool Half Marathon this March and demystify their process around choosing to take on the challenge and what running means to them as individuals.
How does running support you with your mental health and wellbeing?
‘Running gives me a real sense of achievement and headspace to clear my mind. Having a goal like the Liverpool Half to train towards kept me motivated and focused, and crossing that finish line was such a boost.’ – Hannah
Running has become a huge part of supporting my own mental health and wellbeing. I never expected it to help me as much as it has, but it’s given me routine and a healthy way to process my grief. It’s helped me find strength during one of the most difficult periods of my life, and completing both the Liverpool Half Marathon and the London Marathon showed me that we’re capable of so much more than we often believe.” – Katriona
Why did you decide to run the Liverpool Half Marathon for Open Door Charity?
‘I wanted to take on a challenge for a cause close to my heart, and Open Door Charity’s work really resonated with me. Fundraising while training gave me an extra reason to keep pushing on the tough days.’ – Hannah
“I decided to run the Liverpool Half Marathon for Open Door Charity as part of my training for the London Marathon, which I went on to complete a few weeks later for Samaritans. It felt really special to support a local charity providing vital mental health services near my hometown. After losing my boyfriend to mental health struggles in 2025, Open Door’s work means so much to me on a deeply personal level, so fundraising for them was something I really wanted to do.’ – Katriona
How was your experience on the day of the race?
‘Honestly, it was the best time ever. The atmosphere was incredible, the crowd support and energy along the route kept me going the whole way. I finished in 2 hours 2 minutes, which I was super proud of as it was my first half marathon, but it was the vibe of the whole day that made it so special.’- Hannah
‘The race itself was an amazing experience. The atmosphere was incredible, with so many people lining the streets to cheer everyone on, and the support from the volunteers made such a difference. Crossing the finish line knowing I was raising money for a cause that means so much to me made the achievement even more rewarding. It was also a real confidence boost ahead of the London Marathon.’ – Katriona
What advice would you give to someone wanting to take part next year?
‘For anyone thinking about taking part next year, I’d say absolutely go for it! Whether you’re an experienced runner or taking on your first half marathon, it’s such a well-supported event and the atmosphere carries you through the tough miles. My biggest advice would be to trust your training, soak up the support, and enjoy every moment.’ – Katriona
‘Just go for it! Trust your training, soak up the atmosphere, and don’t worry too much about your time- the crowd and the other runners carry you round. It’s such a well-organised, supportive event.’ – Hannah
